The Sakar Khan Mosque, located in the district of Kalupur near the western edge of Ahmedabad's historic walled city, is an architectural gem likely dating back to around 1460 or 1470 CE. Its design reflects the stylistic trends of that period, emphasizing both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The mosque is rectangular in shape and features an open eastern facade that serves as its most prominent architectural element. This facade is organized into three distinct sections: a central opening that spans nine bays and two smaller side openings, each consisting of three bays. This layout provides an inviting approach to the mosque's interior while maintaining a balanced, symmetrical aesthetic. Inside, the mosque houses a trabeated, or pillared, prayer hall, which is a hallmark of Indian-Islamic architecture. The hall's spatial arrangement is defined by five large domes that run longitudinally through its center, creating expansive bays beneath them. These domed bays are separated into sections by a system of aisles. Two aisles flank the central domed bays, one on either side, providing a transitional space between the central prayer area and the qibla wall, which is oriented towards Mecca, as well as the mosque's eastern entrance. Another aisle runs perpendicular to the central line of domes, separating the domed bays from one another and from the mosque?s side walls. This intricate arrangement of domes, bays, and aisles reflects the thoughtful architectural planning of the mosque, ensuring both structural stability and a serene, spacious environment for worshippers.
