Nestled in the quiet village of Atapur on the outskirts of Badaun, the Tomb of Allama Mullah Abdul Qadir Badayuni stands as a poignant reminder of the intellectual and spiritual contributions of one of Mughal India's most influential historians. ʽAbd al-Qadir Badayuni, born in 1540 in Basavar (modern Rajasthan) and named after the town of Badaun where he settled in 1562, was a devout Sunni scholar who served in Emperor Akbar's court from 1574. Appointed as a court historian and translator, he rendered key Hindu epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata into Persian as part of Akbar's cultural initiatives, yet privately critiqued the emperor's religious reforms, including the Din-i Ilahi, in his seminal work Muntakhab-ut-Tawarikh (completed 1595). This three-volume history chronicles Muslim rule in India from the Ghaznavids to Akbar's 40th regnal year, offering an orthodox perspective on events, biographies of scholars, and theological reflections.
