Dargah Hazrat Goonge Shah Ramatullah Alaih is a modest local Sufi shrine in the rural village of Ramzanpur, near Badaun in Uttar Pradesh, India. Dedicated to the revered saint Hazrat Goonge Shah (also known as Gunga Shah), it serves as a serene site for devotees seeking spiritual solace through prayer and ziyarat (pilgrimage). The shrine embodies the Chishti Sufi tradition prevalent in the region, attracting local pilgrims for its humble architecture and devotional practices.
Established in the late 18th century (circa 1780–1800 CE) during the waning years of Mughal influence in Rohilkhand, the dargah honors Hazrat Goonge Shah Ramatullah Alaih, a Chishti Sufi saint known for his ascetic life and miracles among local communities. The shrine was constructed shortly after the saint's wafat (demise), reflecting the era's Sufi expansion in rural Uttar Pradesh under Nawabi patronage. Badaun, a historic Sufi hub since the 13th century with ties to saints like Nizamuddin Auliya (born in Badaun in 1236 CE), provided fertile ground for such local shrines. The structure, built primarily of local brick and lime mortar with simple arched doorways, has undergone minor renovations in the 20th century but retains its original modest design without ornate domes or minarets typical of larger urban dargahs. Architectural and Religious Significance As a quintessential local dargah, the site features a central mazar (tomb) chamber housing the saint's grave, surrounded by a small open courtyard for congregational prayers. Adjacent is a compact mosque (masjid) with a mihrab (prayer niche) oriented toward the Kaaba, facilitating daily namaz and Friday jumu'ah. The mosque's facade includes subtle Quranic inscriptions in Thuluth script, emphasizing tawhid (oneness of God) and the saint's teachings on humility and devotion. Devotees offer chadar (sacred sheets), incense, and floral tributes at the mazar, often reciting Fatiha and salawat. Urs (annual death anniversary) celebrations in Rabi' al-Thani draw villagers for qawwali sessions and communal langar (free meals), fostering interfaith harmony in line with Chishti principles. Unlike grander sites like Ajmer Sharif, this shrine remains unadorned, underscoring its role as a grassroots spiritual anchor in Badaun's Islamic landscape.
