Mecca Masjid is one of India's largest and oldest mosques, a prime example of Deccan Islamic architecture built during the Qutb Shahi dynasty. Mecca Masjid, located in the heart of Hyderabad's old city, stands as a monumental testament to the architectural prowess of the Qutb Shahi rulers. Construction began in 1617 under Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the founder of Hyderabad, and was completed in 1693 during the reign of Aurangzeb, making it a project spanning over seven decades. The mosque's name derives from a legend that bricks for its central arch were baked in Mecca, symbolizing its spiritual prestige. The structure covers approximately 2 acres, with a rectangular prayer hall measuring 225 feet by 220 feet, supported by 15 imposing granite pillars, each crafted from single stones weighing up to 8 tons. The facade boasts five arches, the central one taller and more ornate, adorned with delicate stucco work and calligraphy from the Quran. Flanking the main entrance are two minarets, though only one remains intact after lightning damage. The courtyard, surrounded by a cloister, includes a stone platform where the ruler's throne was placed during Eid prayers, underscoring its role as a center for public and royal religious life. Historically, the mosque served as a focal point for the Golconda kingdom's Islamic culture, blending Persian, Indian, and regional styles. It witnessed key events, including the deposition of the last Qutb Shahi ruler and the Nizam's era. Today, it remains an active place of worship, drawing pilgrims and tourists for its serene mihrab and the nearby tomb of Mir Haydar, a revered saint. Its enduring presence highlights the syncretic heritage of India's Islamic architecture.
