Dargah Hazratbal Shrine, also popularly called Dargah Sharif, is a highly revered Sufi shrine and mosque located in Seer Hamdan near Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir. The shrine was established by Inayat Begum, the daughter of Khwaja Nur-ud-Din Eshai, who became the custodian of the Moi-e-Muqaddas, the blessed hair of the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The original structure was built in the 17th century during the reign of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and underwent major reconstruction between 1968 and 1979, reflecting Mughal-inspired architecture with a marble façade, dome, and minaret. The shrine is known for its spiritual significance, attracting devotees from across the region, and serves as a center for congregational prayers, religious ceremonies, and public display of the sacred relic on special Islamic occasions. The shrine has witnessed historical events, including the 1963 disappearance of the relic and its recovery in 1964, which brought nationwide attention and communal solidarity. Over time, it has also undergone modern development and beautification, blending traditional Kashmiri artistry with contemporary facilities to accommodate thousands of pilgrims.
