Khan Jahan's Masjid

Khan Jahan's Masjid

The roza stands as a testament to the architectural and cultural legacy of the time, even as parts of it have succumbed to the ravages of time

The Khan Jahan Masjid, located near the Kanja Gate and close to the Protestant Cemetery on the riverside at the southwestern corner of the city walls?today recognized as part of the Sabarmati Riverfront?is a remarkable example of medieval architecture. Built entirely of cut stone, the mosque exhibits a trabeate style that reflects its apparent antiquity. Despite its age, the structure is well-preserved, though the interior has been whitewashed over time. The mosque's roof is adorned with small domes, adding to its aesthetic appeal, and it features three mihrabs. Notably, the inscription slab from above the central mihrab has been removed, adding an air of mystery to its history. The mimbar within the mosque is distinctive, consisting of seven steps, a design characteristic of its era. In front of the mosque lies the roza (mausoleum) of Khan Jahan, which, though partly fallen, retains two of its original domes. This mausoleum is believed to date back to the earlier half of the fifteenth century, highlighting its historical significance.
