The Gumti Masjid, also known as the Hasan Shahid Masjid or Bawa Ali ki Masjid, is a historical mosque located near the Isanpur Flyover in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
The Gumti Masjid is a small yet intricately designed mosque located in Isanpur, a suburb of Ahmedabad situated southeast of the old city center. This historical structure is believed to have been constructed during the first half of the sixteenth century CE (tenth century AH), based on architectural comparisons with other similar mosques in the area. The mosque is rectangular in plan, with three solid walls enclosing the north, west, and south sides, while the eastern side features an open facade. This open facade is accessed by a broad flight of stairs, adding a sense of grandeur to its approach. The facade itself is segmented by four sets of double pillars, which create a rhythmic and balanced visual appeal. Flanking this open side are two exquisitely crafted minarets that take the form of tapering columns. These minarets are adorned with horizontal registers of varying widths and profiles, each showcasing a unique motif intricately carved into the stone. The motifs reflect a harmonious blend of local stone-carving traditions that are evident in both Hindu and Muslim architectural styles of the region. Inside the mosque, the space is divided into two parallel aisles aligned with the qibla, each consisting of five bays. The qibla aisle, closer to the western wall, features three bays crowned with domes, creating a spatial hierarchy and emphasizing the direction of prayer. The qibla wall itself is richly adorned, punctuated by three ornate mihrabs, which serve as focal points for worshippers. Between these mihrabs are two small windows that allow natural light to filter into the prayer area, enhancing its serene ambiance. The side walls, on the north and south, each contain a window and an arched doorway, providing both ventilation and access. The architectural elements of the mosque, from its carved minarets to its domed bays, showcase a remarkable synthesis of artistic traditions, making the Gumti Masjid an important historical and cultural landmark in Ahmedabad.
