Jamia Masjid of Mohalla Jamia in Old Town Baramulla is an architecturally and historically significant mosque, believed to have been originally built during the reign of Sultan Zain-ul-Abideen. Later, during the Mughal period, it underwent major renovations under Emperor Aurangzeb. The mosque suffered severe damage during a 19th-century earthquake and was subsequently restored in 1313 AH (1895 AD) by Abdul Samad. Set in the tightly built neighbourhood near the right bank of River Jhelum, the site reflects a deep connection with Baramulla’s cultural and religious heritage. The region, historically known for its fruit trade and surrounding apple orchards, houses several notable religious sites of both Muslims and Hindus. The Jamia Masjid stands out for its Kashmiri wooden architectural style, square layout of about 5000 sq ft, robust fluted deodar columns, three-tiered roof, intricate cheri jebi wooden ceiling, carved entrance doorway, decorated mimbar, and ornamental motifs that showcase Kashmir’s traditional craftsmanship.
