Khushal Mattoo Mosque is one of the oldest religious structures in the Sopore area, dating back to the early 19th century. The mosque was constructed by the revered saint Khushal Mattoo, after whom the surrounding locality is named Khushal Mattoo Mohalla. Situated within the historic riverfront town of Sopore, founded in 880 AD by the engineer Suyya during the reign of King Avantivarman, the mosque reflects the town’s rich vernacular heritage. Architecturally, the mosque follows the vernacular Kashmiri (Kṣatriya) style and has an irregular plan that adapts to the curving street profile. It occupies portions of the ground and first floors of a mixed-use structure that also accommodates shops and residential rooms. A prominent feature of the mosque is its continuous wooden gallery (dub) projecting from the first floor, embellished with cusped arched removable wooden panels (varusi). The prayer halls are located on the first and second floors, along with an attached hammam and darasgah. The structure is predominantly timber-based, featuring a decorative brangh (spire) with fretwork and pinjrakari, mud-plastered interiors, exposed wooden joists, and traditional sathrun mud flooring, embodying the craftsmanship of traditional Sopore architecture.
