Mohammad Maqbool Guroo House is a traditional residential structure located in Khwaja Gilgit Mohalla, Sopore, representing the vernacular architectural character of north Kashmir. The building was originally constructed by Abdul Ahad Guroo, who was professionally involved in the carpet business, reflecting Sopore’s historic association with traditional crafts and trade. At present, the house is owned by his successor Mohammad Maqbool Guroo, who continues the same family occupation. Sopore, historically known as Suyya-pur, was founded in 880 AD by Suyya, an able engineer of King Avantivarman, and developed as a linear riverfront settlement along the River Jhelum. The building follows the vernacular Kashmiri (Kṣatriya) architectural style and is a three-storey structure with its entrance from the eastern side. A centrally placed entrance corridor has two rooms on either side and leads to a staircase accessing the upper floors. Architecturally, the house features a projecting wooden dub with trellis work, arched windows on all façades, and a distinctive pyramidal-shaped roof finished with ornamental tin decorations, adding to its traditional aesthetic value.
