Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani’s Dargah, popularly known as Charar-e-Sharief Shrine, is a revered Sufi shrine and mosque located in Charar-i-Sharief town of Budgam district, Jammu & Kashmir. The shrine is dedicated to Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani (Nund Rishi), the most prominent Kashmiri Sufi saint and founder of the Rishi Order, who passed away around 1438 CE and was buried at this site. In 1446, Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin laid the foundation stone of the shrine, and the mosque structure was completed around 1460 to honor the saint. Over centuries, the shrine underwent several restorations, including repairs by Yakub Shah Chak, reconstruction by Afghan governor Atta Mohammad Khan in the 19th century, and later development during Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad’s tenure. The shrine was severely damaged in a fire during the 1995 armed conflict, but was subsequently rebuilt. It holds immense spiritual and cultural significance in Kashmir and is visited not only by Muslims but also by people from other faiths.
