The Jami Masjid at Bharuch Fort is a significant mosque located at the top of the hill in Bharuch, Gujarat, India.
The mosque in question is architecturally significant, with a design that merges elements of both Islamic and Hindu architectural styles. At the heart of the structure is an open courtyard, which is surrounded by gateways, offering access to the main prayer chamber situated on the western side. The prayer chamber itself is an open pillared verandah, skillfully divided into three distinct compartments. These compartments are supported by pillars, each of which holds up a large dome, forming a mandapa-like structure. As a result, the mosque boasts three grand domes, along with ten smaller domes, contributing to its unique skyline. A total of 48 pillars further support the structure, enhancing its spacious and open feel. Interestingly, the mosque does not feature a fa?ade adorned with arches, a characteristic often seen in traditional Islamic mosques, making it stand out in its design approach. On the western wall of the prayer chamber, the qibla is marked with pointed arches and intricate Islamic motifs, which are typically found in mosque designs. However, the architectural inspiration for these features can be traced back to the patterns of niches commonly seen in Hindu temples. This fusion of design elements from two distinct architectural traditions?Islamic arches and Hindu temple niches?creates a visually compelling and culturally rich feature in the mosque's overall aesthetic. This blend of influences reflects the diverse artistic and architectural exchange that occurred during the period of its construction.
