The Tomb of Bahu Begum (also known as Bahu Begum ka Maqbara or Gulab Bari in some references, though distinct from the husband's tomb) is a majestic 18th-19th century mausoleum in Ram Nagar, Faizabad (now part of Ayodhya district), Uttar Pradesh. This white marble structure serves as the final resting place of Begum Unmatuzzohra Bano (Bahu Begum), wife of Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula of Awadh. Often called the "Taj Mahal of the East," it exemplifies non-Mughal Awadhi architecture and stands as one of the tallest monuments in the region.
The Tomb of Bahu Begum is a remarkable example of Islamic funerary architecture from the Nawabi era in India, reflecting the grandeur and cultural synthesis of the Awadh region. Dedicated to Begum Unmatuzzohra Bano, popularly known as Bahu Begum, who was the influential wife of Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula (the third Nawab of Awadh), the mausoleum was commissioned posthumously after her death in 1816. Born into a wealthy Persian family, Bahu Begum played a pivotal role in Awadh's history, notably using her personal wealth to aid the kingdom following the Nawab's defeat at the Battle of Buxar in 1764. The structure, rising to about 42 meters with three domes, was built at a cost of three lakh rupees under the supervision of her chief advisor Darab Ali Khan (foundation laid) and later completed by others. Crafted primarily from white marble, it draws inspiration from the Taj Mahal, earning its nickname as the "Taj Mahal of the East." Its intricate interiors feature exquisite carvings, geometric patterns, and floral motifs, blending Persian, Indian, and Islamic influences in a distinctive non-Mughal style unique to Awadh. Located in a serene garden setting near her residence, Moti Mahal, the tomb offers panoramic views of Faizabad (historic Ayodhya) from its upper levels. Though not a mosque or active shrine, it holds deep historical significance as a mausoleum (maqbara) and is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. The site's enduring marble sheen and architectural elegance make it a poignant reminder of the Nawabi patronage of arts and the resilience of figures like Bahu Begum in India's Islamic heritage.
