A historic mausoleum and Imambara complex in Faizabad, known as the “Garden of Roses,” built as the tomb of Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula, the third Nawab of Awadh, surrounded by gardens, fountains, and cultural architecture.
Imambada Gulab Bari, located in the Vaidehi Nagar area on State Highway 9 in Faizabad (now part of Ayodhya district), Uttar Pradesh, is a significant historical and architectural monument. The site is best known as the tomb of Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula (third Nawab of Awadh), who himself commissioned its construction during his lifetime. The name Gulab Bari literally means “Garden of Roses,” reflecting the lush rose gardens and water features that envelop the mausoleum. The complex includes not only the tomb itself but also an Imambara (prayer hall), mosque, Shahi Hammam (royal bath), baradari, and ornamental gateways. The mausoleum is set in a traditional Charbagh (four-part) layout with fountains and shallow water channels, exemplifying classic Islamic and Nawabi architectural styles. Over time, Imambada Gulab Bari has become both a cherished heritage site and a place of local reverence, celebrated for its serene garden ambiance and regal historical significance.
