Lila Gumbaj Ki Masjid

Lila Gumbaj Ki Masjid

The Lila Gumbaj Ki Mosque is an architectural gem located in Champaner, Gujarat, India. Once a functioning mosque, it now serves as a heritage site of significant historical importance. Recognized as a Monument of National Importance, the mosque is part of the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Lila Gumbaj Ki Mosque, also referred to as a masjid, is a striking example of Islamic architecture, built on a high plinth that enhances its grandeur. The mosque's frontage features a central arched entrance, flanked symmetrically by two lateral arches, which together create a harmonious and imposing facade. Historically, the mosque had three entrances, strategically located in the east, south, and north directions, providing access from multiple approaches. The structure is adorned with well-spaced minarets, skillfully designed with horizontal cornices and mouldings that add depth and character to the architecture. These minarets are further embellished with decorative niches, showcasing the intricate craftsmanship of the time. The mosque is crowned by three domes, with the central dome being particularly notable for its unique fluted design and vibrant colors, which draw attention to its artistic and structural significance. Adjacent to the mosque, at the north-east corner, lies a rectangular ablution tank, an essential feature for ritual purification before prayers. The tank is equipped with a deep drain in front, reflecting thoughtful engineering to manage water flow. Inside the mosque, the prayer hall houses three mehrabs, or prayer niches, that serve as focal points for worship. These mehrabs are beautifully adorned, with the central one featuring a suspended kalash, a symbolic vessel, intricately carved with floral motifs. This fusion of religious symbolism and ornamental artistry adds a unique aesthetic dimension to the mosque, making it a noteworthy heritage structure within the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park.
