Kabutarkhana, also known as Khajuri Masjid, is a historic structure located in Champaner, Gujarat, within the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Kabutarkhana, a 16th-century pre-Mughal Islamic ruin in Champaner, stands as a small yet remarkable brick structure adorned with lime plaster, located by the serene Vada Talav. This modest edifice, which once served as a sarai or rest house for travelers, is a testament to the architectural ingenuity of the time. Nestled within the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Gujarat, Kabutarkhana holds historical and cultural significance. Lovingly referred to as the "Kabootarkhana," or pigeon roost, this structure also functioned as the summer pavilion for the rulers of Champaner. Its strategic position offers a sweeping view of the adjacent lake, where water birds can often be seen skimming the surface, gliding gracefully, or diving for prey, adding life to the tranquil surroundings. The cool breeze flowing through its sturdy pillars provides respite from the scorching summer heat, especially during the mid-mornings, making it an ideal retreat in its heyday. The passage of time, however, has altered its connection to the lake; the path that once bridged the pavilion to the water now lies buried beneath a modern state highway. The landscape surrounding the Kabutarkhana, characterized by burnt and yellowed grasses, carries the distinct scent of dry heat, evoking the arid charm of the region. This historic gem is just one of the 36 protected sites scattered across the six-square-kilometer expanse of the archaeological park, all safeguarded by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The area is a treasure trove of heritage, boasting remnants of ancient civilizations, including fortifications, palaces, residential quarters, cenotaphs, stepwells, agricultural installations, and water facilities dating back to the 8th to 14th centuries. Together, these relics paint a vivid picture of a flourishing medieval settlement that combined functionality with architectural beauty, encapsulating the rich history of Champaner and its enduring legacy.
