Dargah Baba Budhan Ali Shah R.A., also known as Peer Baba Budhan Shah Ji, Sayyed Shamsuddin, or Peer Baba, is one of the most revered and spiritually significant shrines in the Jammu region, symbolising interfaith harmony and universal spirituality. The saint was born in Talwandi, the birthplace of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, and is believed to have lived an exceptionally long life of nearly 500 years, dedicating himself entirely to the path of Sufism, asceticism, and divine devotion. Renouncing worldly status despite being born into a respected family, Baba Budhan Shah travelled extensively and formed deep spiritual associations with prominent mystics, including Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Bidhi Chand Chhina, and later Guru Hargobind Ji. Historical tradition holds that he lived near Rawalpindi, later moved to Jammu, and finally settled at Kiratpur Sahib, where he passed away in 1643 during the period of Guru Hargobind Ji. His original burial is believed to be in Kiratpur Sahib, where a mausoleum stands on a peaceful hilltop near Baba Gurditta’s ashram, while the shrine at Satwari, Jammu—known officially as Khanqah-e-Budhan Ali Shah—was established using sacred soil brought from Kiratpur. The dargah is world-famous and uniquely associated with two Sikh Gurus, Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Guru Hargobind Ji, making it equally revered by Muslims, Sikhs, and Hindus. A famous legend recorded on the shrine’s plaque narrates the miraculous meeting of Guru Nanak with Pir Budhan Shah, involving a lion milking goats as an act of divine submission, symbolising spiritual supremacy and unity. Another sacred tradition recounts Guru Hargobind Ji later fulfilling Guru Nanak’s promise by holding the Pir’s thumb as identification and receiving the blessed milk. The shrine is believed by devotees to protect Jammu city from calamities and evil influences, and every year a grand fair in October attracts pilgrims from across India, celebrating the saint’s enduring message of peace, compassion, and coexistence. Offerings at the shrine include vegetarian practices of the Pir himself, while devotees often present biryani as fulfilled vows, reflecting the deep faith associated with the dargah.
