Dargah Hazrat Roshan Shah Gummat Wale, located at Gummat Bazaar Road near the famous Raghunath Mandir in the heart of Jammu city, is one of the most prominent and revered Sufi shrines of the Jammu region. Jammu and Kashmir is home to numerous Sufi shrines that are held in high esteem by people of all faiths and communities, and these sacred spaces stand as powerful symbols of human unity, brotherhood, and spiritual harmony. Hazrat Roshan Ali Shah (R.A.) is regarded as one of the earliest and most influential Sufi saints to have arrived in the Jammu region. According to tradition, he was a companion of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and was known for his deep spirituality, wisdom, and miraculous powers. His teachings and personal example played a significant role in keeping the region’s social fabric away from fanaticism and excessive ritualism, instead promoting compassion, tolerance, and inner spiritual discipline. The saint is believed to have been of extraordinary height, which explains why his grave measures nearly 20 feet (nine gaz) in length, giving the shrine its popular name “Maqbara Naugaz.” Impressed by the saint’s miracles and spiritual presence, the then Hindu Raja of Jammu became his devotee and requested him to settle permanently in the city. Upon the saint’s passing, the Raja accorded him full honours and constructed a mausoleum with a grave made of stone and mud. Over time, the dargah emerged as a major centre of pilgrimage, revered equally by Hindus and Muslims, who continue the shared tradition of lighting clay lamps and placing them in alcoves near the grave, reflecting the shrine’s enduring message of interfaith harmony.
