Dargah Shareef Hazrat Baba Sharfuddin Soharwardi (Rahmatullahi Alaih), popularly known as Pahadi Shareef, Hyderabad Deccan, is one of the most ancient and spiritually significant Sufi shrines of South India and holds exceptional importance in the history of Islamic preaching in the Deccan region. Hazrat Baba Sharfuddin Soharwardi (RA), also revered as Sultan of Deccan, belonged to the illustrious Soharwardi Sufi Order and was a Khalifa of Hazrat Shaykh al-Shayyukh Shahab al-Din Abu Hafs Umar al-Soharwardi (RA) of Baghdad, the founder of the Soharwardi silsila. Born on 16th Shaban 586 A.H. (circa 1190 CE) in Iraq, he was a descendant of Hazrat Syedna Imam Hussain (RA) in the 13th generation, belonging to the noble Bani Hashim and Sadat lineage. Historical and traditional sources affirm that his birth was due to the spiritual prayers of Hazrat Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (RA). Following divine instruction received through a vision of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW), Hazrat Baba Sharfuddin migrated from Baghdad to India in 631 A.H., reached the Deccan in 640 A.H., and became the first Sufi saint to formally establish Islamic preaching in the Deccan. His establishment at Pahadi Shareef dates to 640 A.H. (circa 1242 CE), making the shrine over 750 years old. He spent nearly 47 years in the Deccan engaged in worship, riyazat, and propagation of Islam, following a rigorous spiritual discipline that included prolonged night prayers, austerity, and mystic seclusion (Chilla Kashi) in a mountain cave which still exists today as Baba Saheb Chilla. Known for his exceptional humility, selflessness, tolerance, and opposition to caste, race, and social discrimination, he preached equality, brotherhood, and peaceful coexistence. His teachings attracted thousands from all communities, and many embraced Islam due to his character rather than force or debate. Hazrat Baba Sharfuddin (RA) passed away on 19th Shaban 687 A.H. (circa 1288 CE) at the age of 101 years, and his Urs is commemorated annually from 16th to 22nd Shaban, drawing hundreds of thousands of devotees irrespective of religion. The shrine remains under the custodianship of his descendants, with the Sajjada Nashin lineage continuing through Hazrat Baba Fariduddin Soharwardi (RA) and his successors.
