The Tomb of Islam Khan is a notable historical Islamic site and mausoleum located in Dadupura, Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh, India. It forms part of the larger Jama Masjid complex in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Fatehpur Sikri, a Mughal architectural masterpiece founded by Emperor Akbar.
Nestled within the historic precincts of Fatehpur Sikri—a planned Mughal city near Agra that served as the imperial capital from 1571 to 1585—the Tomb of Islam Khan stands as a poignant tribute to one of the empire's loyal warriors and a link in the Chishti Sufi lineage. Islam Khan I, born Shaikh Alauddin Chishti, was the grandson of Shaikh Salim Chishti, the Sufi saint whose blessings were sought by Emperor Akbar for an heir (leading to the birth of Prince Salim, later Jahangir). Rising through the ranks, Islam Khan became a key general under Jahangir, known for his indomitable spirit, conquests, and unwavering loyalty. Following his death in 1613, Emperor Jahangir personally oversaw the laying of the foundation or placement of his remains in this structure. The tomb, constructed in red sandstone typical of Fatehpur Sikri's monuments, features a grand facade, a prominent central dome, and an array of thirty-six surrounding chhatris that add to its distinctive skyline. The interior houses multiple graves, reflecting its role as a family burial site for descendants of Shaikh Salim Chishti. Its original use as a Jamaat Khana highlights the spiritual heritage of the area, where disciples gathered for religious discourse and devotion. Today, as part of the Jama Masjid complex (which includes the renowned Tomb of Shaikh Salim Chishti and the Buland Darwaza), the site attracts visitors interested in Mughal history, Sufi traditions, and Indo-Islamic architecture. It remains a serene yet impressive reminder of the empire's military prowess intertwined with spiritual reverence.
