Noori Jama Masjid

Noori Jama Masjid

Noori Jama Masjid (also known as Noori Masjid or Noori Jama Masjid), located in Hazratnagar Garhi area (likely a local variant or associated locality name, though primary references point to Lalauli town in Fatehpur district), is a historic local mosque in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is a community mosque with historical significance, recently in the news due to partial demolition.

The Noori Jama Masjid, situated in the Lalauli area (often locally associated with Hazratnagar Garhi or similar naming in records), was constructed in 1839 by local residents. At the time of its building, the surrounding area had no major road infrastructure—the Banda-Bahraich State Highway (or related road) was reportedly developed much later, around 1956 according to some accounts. This modest mosque features traditional elements typical of regional community masjids: a prayer hall oriented toward the qibla (mihrab), possibly simple domes or minarets, and an open space for congregational prayers (Jumma namaz). It has been a vital spiritual center, where prayers have been offered continuously for nearly two centuries, embodying the enduring Islamic presence in the region. The mosque gained widespread attention in December 2024 when the Fatehpur district administration partially demolished a section, citing illegal encroachment on the road for widening purposes. The management committee contested this, asserting that the original 1839 structure predates the road and that only a recent addition (built in the last few years) was affected. The incident sparked discussions on heritage preservation, urban development, and communal sensitivities, similar to other recent cases in Uttar Pradesh.
