Historical Background Built By: Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the last ruler of Oudh (1822?1887), as a summer residence. Named After: Possibly Alexander the Great (locally referred to as Sikandar). Or Sikandar Mahal Begum, the Nawab's favorite wife. Originally laid out around 1800 as a royal garden by Nawab Saadat Ali Khan. Later developed and improved by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah during the mid-19th century. Architectural and Cultural Significance Layout and Design: The garden is enclosed by fortified walls with loopholes, corner bastions, and a grand gateway. A pavilion in the center was likely the site of cultural performances such as Ras-lilas, Kathak dances, musical gatherings, and poetic mehfils. Cultural Hub: The villa hosted numerous leisure and artistic events, reflecting Wajid Ali Shah's appreciation for music, dance, and poetry. Role in the 1857 Indian Rebellion During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, Sikander Bagh became a stronghold for sepoy mutineers during the Siege of Lucknow. The British stormed the villa, resulting in the massacre of 2,200 sepoy mutineers within its walls. This tragic event marked Sikander Bagh as a symbol of resistance and bloodshed during the uprising.
