Osmania General Hospital (OGH) is a historic healthcare facility located in Afzal Gunj, Hyderabad, India. It was established during the reign of Mir Osman Ali Khan, the last Nizam of Hyderabad, after whom the hospital is named. Operated by the Government of Telangana, OGH is one of the largest and most significant medical institutions in the state. The hospital was constructed at an impressive cost of ₹2 crore, a testament to its importance and grandeur at the time of its establishment.
Osmania General Hospital (OGH), one of the most iconic and historic healthcare institutions in India, has its roots in the Afzal Gunj Hospital, which was established in 1866 by Salar Jung I. This predecessor laid the foundation for modern medical services in Hyderabad. The current hospital building was constructed in 1919 under the orders of Mir Osman Ali Khan, the last Nizam of Hyderabad. Designed by the British architect Vincent Jerome Esch in collaboration with Nawab Khan Bahadur Mirza Akbar Baig, the structure is an architectural marvel built in the Indo-Saracenic style, blending Islamic, Hindu, and Gothic architectural elements. In 1926, the wards of the older Afzal Gunj Hospital were moved to this state-of-the-art facility. The hospital's first resident medical officer (RMO) was Dr. Yusuf Mirza, with Dr. K. Gopal Rao as one of the pioneering doctors working alongside him. The contributions of these early medical professionals are commemorated with their names inscribed at the entrance to the General Ward. In recent years, Osmania General Hospital has been at the center of discussions regarding its preservation. In 2015, the Chief Minister of Telangana, K. Chandrashekhar Rao, proposed demolishing the historic building to make way for a modern facility. However, this announcement was met with widespread protests from heritage activists. Following the backlash, the plan was shelved. Himayat Ali Mirza, a great-grandson of Mir Osman Ali Khan, collaborated with the Indian National Trust for Arts and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) to advocate for the restoration of the building. Their efforts highlight the belief that minor renovations could preserve this historical landmark while maintaining its functional purpose. Today, Osmania General Hospital remains a critical healthcare facility with over a thousand beds, serving patients from across the region. It is also closely associated with Osmania Medical College, one of India's premier medical institutions, and contributes significantly to the training of medical professionals. The legacy of OGH is part of a broader heritage of healthcare and education in Hyderabad State, which also includes institutions like Osmania Medical College and Osmania College, Kurnool. These establishments reflect the Nizam's commitment to advancing healthcare and education, leaving a lasting impact on the region.
