The Shahi Qila, also known as Karar Fort or Jaunpur Fort, is a magnificent 14th-century fort located in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. Situated close to the Shahi Bridge on the Gomti River, the fort is a significant historical and architectural landmark, bearing the imprints of various dynasties, including the Tughlaqs, Mughals, and the British Empire. Architectural Features Fort Layout: The Shahi Qila is an irregular quadrangle enclosed by stone walls and raised earthworks. It features a two-storey residential and administrative palace, built in a square layout with a central pillared verandah (aiwan) on the first floor, overlooking the ground floor. Main Gates: The fort?s largest inner gate stands 14 meters (46 ft) tall, with an external surface made of ashlar stone. An outer gate, constructed during Mughal Emperor Akbar's reign, was adorned with blue and yellow tiles and ornamental niches. Hammam (Turkish Bath): The Bhool Bhulaiya Hammam, partly underground, is a perfect example of Turkish bath architecture. It features inlet and outlet channels for hot and cold water, emphasizing its advanced engineering. Mosque: The mosque within the fort is considered one of the oldest structures in Jaunpur. Built by Barbak in 1376, it features a simple arcade, three low central domes, and two nearby stone pillars. The Persian inscription on the 12-meter pillar narrates the mosque?s history. Historical Significance Origins: The fort was constructed by Ibrahim Naib Barbak, a chieftain of Firoz Shah Tughlaq, using materials from temples and palaces of the Rathore kings of Kannauj. Renovations: Destroyed multiple times by the Lodhis and later by the British, the fort underwent significant repairs during the Mughal era under the patronage of Min'im Khan, the governor of Jaunpur. Cultural Harmony: The inscription at the outer gate appeals to religious inclusivity, urging Hindus, Muslims, and Christians to read their respective holy texts: the Gita, Koran, and Bible. The Shahi Qila is a treasure trove of history, architecture, and cultural heritage.
