iloufer Hospital, located in the heart of historic Hyderabad, has a rich history tied to the legacy of Princess Niloufer. Founded in 1949, the hospital was established by Niloufer, the daughter of an Ottoman princess and wife of Prince Moazzam Jah, the son of the seventh Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan, of Hyderabad. Much like Florence Nightingale, Princess Niloufer had a strong desire to serve the less fortunate. She devoted herself to nursing and serving the poor, channeling her passion for helping others into the creation of this reputable medical institution. Her compassionate legacy continues to resonate through the hospital's service to the community.
In 1949, Princess Niloufer was deeply shaken by the tragic death of one of her maids, Rafatunnisa Begum, during childbirth due to the lack of adequate medical facilities. This heartbreaking incident sparked a profound sense of responsibility in the princess, compelling her to take immediate action to prevent further deaths caused by insufficient healthcare. The loss of Rafatunnisa was a turning point, and the princess vowed that no other mother would suffer the same fate. To address the dire need for better medical services, she informed her father-in-law, Mir Osman Ali Khan, the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, about the severe lack of healthcare facilities for women, particularly during childbirth. At the time, childbirth typically took place at home, and even minor complications could lead to fatal consequences for both the mother and child. Maternity care was underdeveloped, and women often had to face life-threatening situations without access to proper medical assistance. Mir Najaf Ali Khan, a member of the Nizam's Charitable Trust, recalls that the princess famously declared, ?No more Rafaths shall die,? when she made the decision to build a hospital dedicated to addressing these issues. With this unwavering commitment, Princess Niloufer set out to establish a healthcare institution that would cater specifically to the needs of women and children, offering specialized services to reduce the maternal and infant mortality rates. As a result of her compassionate philanthropy, Niloufer Hospital was founded in the Red Hills area of Hyderabad. The hospital was designed with a particular focus on maternity care, providing critical medical support to women during childbirth. What began as a modest 100-bed hospital in 1953, aimed at addressing the healthcare needs of mothers and children, rapidly expanded as it met the growing demands of the community. Over time, Niloufer Hospital evolved into a major healthcare institution, increasing its capacity to 1,200 beds. The hospital began offering advanced services in maternity, pediatrics, pediatric surgery, and diagnostic facilities, making it one of the most prominent healthcare centers in the region. Under the current administration of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government, which came into power in 2014, steps have been taken to bring more structure and discipline to the hospital?s operations, ensuring that the institution remains efficient and serves the community effectively. Today, Niloufer Hospital continues to be a beacon of hope for many, providing specialized care to women and children in need. The hospital?s legacy is not just reflected in its growth but also in its ongoing commitment to philanthropic work. One notable example is the treatment of Veena and Vani, conjoined twins born in 2003, who have been receiving care at Niloufer Hospital. The hospital, under the leadership of Himayat Ali Mirza, the grandson of Moazzam Jah and his second wife, remains a testament to Princess Niloufer?s vision of improving maternal and child healthcare in Hyderabad and beyond.
