Jamia Masjid Srinagar is one of the most historic and important mosques of Kashmir, located in the Nowhatta area of the Old City of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The mosque was commissioned in 1394 CE by Sultan Sikandar Shah Miri and completed in 1402 CE at the behest of Mir Mohammad Hamadani, son of the great Sufi saint Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani. Built in the Persian architectural style with strong Central Asian influences, the mosque reflects simplicity, spiritual depth, and grandeur. The structure is quadrangular in shape and features four massive wooden turrets placed at the center of each side, connected by spacious prayer halls supported by 378 deodar wood pillars. The mosque complex includes a large inner courtyard designed on the traditional Chaar Bagh pattern, with a water tank and fountain at its center used for ablution. Constructed mainly from deodar wood, stone, and bricks, Jamia Masjid Srinagar can accommodate around 33,333 worshippers at a time, while during peak congregations, up to 100,000 people can offer prayers. It has remained a central religious, cultural, and socio-political institution in Kashmir and is traditionally headed by the Mirwaiz of Kashmir.
