Shah-e-Hamdan Mosque, popularly known as Khanqah-e-Moula, is one of the most revered and historically significant Islamic monuments in Kashmir, located at Zaina Kadal in the Old City of Srinagar on the right bank of the River Jhelum, between the Fateh Kadal and Zaina Kadal bridges. The mosque was commissioned in 1395 CE by Sultan Sikandar Butshikan in memory of the great Islamic scholar and Sufi saint Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani, also known as Shah-e-Hamadan, who played a central role in the spread of Islam in the Kashmir Valley. This shrine is regarded as the first khanqah in Kashmir—mosques associated specifically with Sufi saints—and stands as a symbol of Kashmir’s spiritual and cultural transformation during the medieval period. Architecturally, the mosque is a remarkable example of traditional Kashmiri wooden architecture, richly decorated with intricate papier-mâché work and wooden carvings, reflecting Persian and Central Asian influences. Over centuries, the structure faced destruction due to fires, notably in 1480 and 1731 CE, and was subsequently rebuilt and expanded by Sultan Hassan Shah and later by Mughal governor Abdul Barkat Khan. Despite suffering damage again during a fire in 2017, the shrine was carefully restored, preserving its spiritual sanctity and architectural integrity. Due to its historical, religious, and architectural importance, the Khanqah-e-Moula is officially recognized as a Monument of National Importance by the Government of India.
