Masjid Dastgeer Sahib is a highly revered Sufi shrine and mosque located in the Khanyar area of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, and holds immense religious, spiritual, and cultural significance in the Kashmir Valley. The shrine is dedicated to the great Sufi saint Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani (RA) (1077–1166 CE), the founder of the Qadri Sufi order, who is deeply venerated across the Islamic world despite never having visited Kashmir. The shrine houses sacred relics associated with the saint, including the revered Mouia Pak (a strand of the saint’s hair), believed to have been brought to Kashmir from Kandahar in the early 19th century, as well as an ancient Qur’an traditionally attributed to Hazrat Ali (RA) written in early Kufi script. Historically, the shrine is believed to have been initially established around 1767 CE during the governance of Noor Khan Bamzai by Syed Ghulam-ud-Din Azad, a descendant of Shah Sakhi Muhammad Fazil who introduced the Qadri silsila to Kashmir, while major construction and expansion took place between 1845 and 1854 under the patronage of Mir Husain Qadri. Architecturally, the shrine is renowned for its exquisite Kashmiri craftsmanship, particularly the traditional khatamband wooden ceiling, crystal chandeliers, and elaborate papier-mâché wall decorations, giving it a distinctive aesthetic identity. Over the centuries, the shrine has endured fires, notably in 1879 and again in 2012, after which it was carefully restored, preserving both its sanctity and heritage. Beyond its religious importance, Dastgeer Sahib has played a notable role in the socio-political life of Kashmir and remains a central spiritual hub, especially during the annual Urs of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani when thousands of devotees gather for prayers and ziyarat. Since 2003, the shrine has been administered by the Central Waqf Council.
