MAKKI JAMA MASJID

MAKKI JAMA MASJID

Jama Masjid, Gorakhnath, Gorakhpur The Jama Masjid of Gorakhnath is a historic mosque with a heritage dating back approximately 350 years to the Mughal period. This ancient structure reflects a blend of cultural and architectural elegance

The Makki Jama Masjid in Gorakhnath, built during the Mughal period, is about 350 years old. A new mosque was built here 60 years ago. The old mosque had three doors and a dome to enter. The dome had the Iranian symbol of a lotus flower. This indicated that it was a royal mosque. Since the mosque was small, a new mosque was built in 1957. People say that the dome of the old mosque was so strong that hundreds of people took 6 to 8 days to break it. 70-year-old Mohammad Ahmed says that during the Mughal period, when the king used to go on a tour, he used to build a mosque at the place where he stayed. The Mughals had built a mosque here too. At that time, only 300 to 400 people could offer namaz together in the mosque. When the number increased, a new mosque was built in place of the old mosque. The new mosque has 9 doors and 2 big minarets of 30 feet each. Its carvings have been done in such a way that air can come in from all sides. At present, 2500 Namazis offer Namaaz in the mosque on normal days. On Eid, Bakrid and Alvida, 5 to 6 thousand Namazis offer Namaaz.
