The Hazratbal Shrine, also known as Dargah Hazratbal, is one of the most sacred Islamic religious sites in Kashmir and holds exceptional spiritual significance for Muslims of the region. Located in the Hazratbal area of Srinagar on the northern bank of the picturesque Dal Lake, the shrine is revered for housing the Moi-e-Muqqadas, a relic traditionally believed to be a sacred hair strand of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The earliest structure at the site dates back to the 17th century and was constructed during the Mughal period under the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan, initially known as Ishrat Jahan before being converted into a prayer hall in 1634 CE. Custodianship of the relic was established through Inayat Begum, daughter of Khwaja Nur-ud-Din Eshai, and has remained with her descendants. Architecturally, the shrine reflects Islamic design principles and underwent a major reconstruction between 1968 and 1979, during which a marble façade, a prominent dome, and a minaret were added, giving it its present form. Over the centuries, the shrine has remained a focal point of religious devotion, history, and socio-political consciousness in Kashmir, attracting thousands of devotees on special Islamic occasions such as Mawlid-un-Nabi.
