The Aali Masjid, also known as Aali Mosque, is one of the most prominent and historically significant mosques in Srinagar, located within the vast premises of Eidgah Srinagar in the Kashmir Valley. The mosque holds deep religious, architectural, and cultural importance and is regarded as the second-largest mosque in Kashmir after Jamia Masjid Srinagar. According to historical accounts, the mosque was originally built around 1395 CE by Sultan Mohammad Ali Shah Shahmiri, elder brother of Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin (Budshah), and was named after himself. Another tradition attributes its construction or major rebuilding to 1471 CE during the reign of Sultan Hassan Shah, associating it with Sayyid Ali Hamadani (Shah-e-Hamdan), after whom the larger Eidgah complex is also named. Architecturally, Aali Masjid is an outstanding example of traditional Koshur (Kashmiri) wooden architecture, reflecting a harmonious blend of Central Asian influences and indigenous building techniques. The mosque is laid out on a modular grid system and is supported by 151 massive deodar wood columns, each resting on intricately carved stone pedestals. It has a spacious prayer hall, a central dome, and four spires, and can accommodate approximately 2,500 worshippers at a time. Owing to its scale, design, and location, Aali Masjid has historically served as a major congregational and spiritual center in Srinagar and continues to function as an active mosque under the patronage of religious leadership associated with the Mirwaiz of Kashmir.
