The Masjid E Nawab Chanda Saheb (also known as the Vellore Fort Mosque or Madarazaye Mohammadiya Masjid) is one of the most historically significant and architecturally stunning landmarks in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. Located inside the massive granite walls of the Vellore Fort, it stands as a testament to the mid-18th-century Carnatic Sultanate. Historical & Religious Significance Royal Legacy: The mosque was built in 1750 by Nawab Chanda Saheb (born Husayn Dost Khan), who was the Dewan and later the Nawab of the Carnatic. It was constructed during a period of intense power struggles between Chanda Saheb and Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah. Architectural Style: It is a prime example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. The structure is built primarily using brick and lime mortar. It features a grand central dome flanked by elegant minarets and is adorned with intricate floral patterns and ornate carvings on its walls. Preserved Heritage: The mosque is currently a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). While it remains in excellent physical condition, congregational prayers are currently not conducted inside the premises to preserve the structural integrity of the historical site. Dimensions: The main prayer hall measures approximately 40 feet by 15 feet, designed to provide a serene and intimate space for worship during its era of active use. Location & Connectivity: The mosque is situated on the northern side of the Vellore Fort complex, near other historic sites like the Jalakandeswarar Temple and St. John's Church. Cultural Triangle: The mosque’s location inside the fort, adjacent to a temple and a church, makes it a powerful symbol of the long-standing religious harmony in Vellore. Tourist Hub: Being part of the Vellore Fort, it is a major destination for history enthusiasts and photographers. The view of the mosque against the backdrop of the fort’s moats and ramparts is a signature sight of the city. Visual Ambience: Visitors often note the contrast between the rugged granite of the fort walls and the delicate, whitewashed elegance of the mosque’s facade.
