Located directly opposite the historic Vellore Fort, it serves as a Khanqah (a building designed specifically for gatherings of a Sufi brotherhood) and a mosque, dedicated to the memory and teachings of the great Sufi saint of Vellore, popularly known as Qutub-e-Vellore. Historical & Religious Significance Sufi Sanctuary: The site is a primary centre for the Qadiriyya and Chisti Sufi orders in South India. It is dedicated to Hazrath Shah Abul Hassan Kushaiyye, the renowned saint titled Qutub-e-Vellore (the Spiritual Pole of Vellore), who played a monumental role in the spiritual and moral reformation of the region. Establishment: The spiritual foundation of the Khanqah dates back to the late 18th century (approx. 1780). The current grand masonry structure has been preserved and renovated over the centuries to maintain its role as a premier seat of Sufi learning and meditation. Centre of Learning: Historically, this institution was not just a mosque but a prestigious academy where scholars from across India and the Middle East gathered to study Islamic metaphysics (Tasawwuf) and classical Arabic sciences. The Urs Festival: The mosque and shrine are the focal points of the annual Urs of Qutub-e-Vellore. During this time, the "Makkan" (shrine area) becomes a hub of intense spiritual activity, attracting thousands of devotees for traditional Zikr (remembrance) ceremonies and community feasts (Langar). Architecture: The building features unique Indo-Islamic architecture with a distinct "Makkan" style—characterised by large courtyards, arched corridors, and a serene inner sanctum that reflects the aesthetic of spiritual retreats found in the Hijaz region. Location & Connectivity: The Khanqah is strategically positioned in the Makkan area, directly facing the Bangalore Road entrance of the Vellore Fort. Spiritual Lineage: The institution continues to be managed by the descendants of the saint, who maintain the traditional "Sajjada Nashin" (hereditary spiritual head) system. Healing & Peace: Visitors often describe the atmosphere as exceptionally tranquil. It is a common sight for people of various faiths to visit seeking peace and spiritual solace.
