The Periya Pallivasal (the Big Mosque) in Pandaravadai is a site of immense historical and religious importance, located in the Papanasam region (often accessed via the Ariyalur-Thanjavur corridor). It serves as a central landmark for the local Muslim community, particularly those historically involved in betel leaf cultivation. Historical and Religious Significance Ancient Origins: The mosque’s history dates back to 1389 CE, when a small prayer hall was first established by the local community. The "Big Mosque" Expansion: In 1519 CE, the renowned Sufi saint Nagore Shahul Hamid Badusha visited Pandaravadai. Observing the growth of the local congregation, he suggested the construction of a larger structure. Legend holds that he helped the villagers fund the project by locating a copper pillar in a nearby pond to be sold for resources. This new, larger structure was named "Periya Pallivasal" to distinguish it from the original, smaller mosque. Architectural acoustics: The mosque is noted for its exceptional acoustics. It features five vaults designed to deflect and carry the voice of the Imam to the very back of the hall without distortion, a feat of pre-modern engineering. Conservation: In 2004, the mosque underwent significant scientific restoration led by conservation engineers to address structural cracks and moisture seepage, ensuring the 500-year-old heritage structure remains preserved for future generations. WAQF Institution: It operates as a vital WAQF institution (ID: 411), managing local welfare activities, including the Crescent Matriculation Higher Secondary School, founded in 1986 under its trust. Location and Connectivity: The mosque is situated on West Street, a central artery of the Pandaravadai settlement. Heritage Status: It is recognised as one of the oldest and most architecturally significant mosques in the rural belt between Ariyalur and Thanjavur. Community Anchor: The mosque is the nerve centre for the Pandaravadai Periya Pallivasal Trust, which oversees extensive charitable work, including food distribution and educational support for underprivileged families. Strategic Access: Located near the NH 45C, it is a frequent stop for travellers and pilgrims moving through the fertile Papanasam region.
