The Puliyampatti Dharga Mosque (properly known as the Hazrat Sultan Syed Ibrahim Shaheed Dharga) is one of the most significant and spiritually potent Islamic shrines in southern Tamil Nadu. Located in the Puliyampatti village of the Thoothukudi district, it is an extension of the broader spiritual lineage of the famous Erwadi Dargah, serving as a sanctuary for those seeking physical healing and spiritual solace. Historical and Religious Significance Sufi Warrior Lineage: The mosque and dargah are dedicated to Hazrat Sultan Syed Ibrahim Shaheed, a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad through his 18th generation. He was the ruler of Madinah who travelled to India in the 12th century to propagate Islam. Establishment: While the spiritual roots date back to the 12th century, the current structured mosque and formal shrine complex at Puliyampatti were established in 1922. It was founded to commemorate the presence of the saint's family and his generals in this specific region during their campaigns in southern Tamil Nadu. Healing Hub: The mosque is widely renowned for its spiritual healing powers. It is a major centre for people suffering from mental ailments, "evil eye" afflictions, and chronic diseases. Pilgrims of all faiths—Muslims, Hindus, and Christians—visit the shrine to tie symbolic locks or stay within the premises for a 40-day spiritual retreat (Chilla). Santhanakoodu Festival: The annual Urus (Santhanakoodu) festival is a massive event held in the Islamic month of Dhul-Qi'dah. It features a grand procession where sandalwood paste is applied to the shrine, symbolising communal harmony as thousands from diverse religious backgrounds participate. Location and Connectivity: The mosque is located in Puliyampatti, a rural pocket approximately 40 km from the main Thoothukudi city, nestled near the border of the Virudhunagar and Thoothukudi districts. Architectural Grandeur: The mosque features a prominent green-and-white dome and a tall minaret that towers over the local landscape. The interior prayer hall is large, intended to accommodate the thousands of pilgrims who stay for extended periods. Communal Harmony: It is often cited as a symbol of the "Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb" of Tamil Nadu, where Hindu families from neighbouring villages often provide the first offerings during major festivals. Sacred Soil: Much like the main Erwadi shrine, the soil around the Puliyampatti Dargah is considered "sacred" by devotees, who often take small amounts home for its perceived curative properties.
