Purani Haveli, also referred to as Masarrat Mahal Palace, is a historic mansion located in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. It served as the official residence of the Nizam of Hyderabad. The Haveli, also known as Haveli Kadeem (meaning "Old Mansion"), was constructed for Sikander Jah, Asaf Jah III (1803?1829) by his father, Ali Khan Bahadur, Asaf Jah II.
Purani Haveli, also known as Masarrat Mahal Palace, is a historical treasure located in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. Its origins trace back to 1717 when Mir Nizam Ali Khan, the second Nizam of Hyderabad, acquired it from Rukunudhaulah of the Momin dynasty. Over time, it evolved into a residence for the Nizam's lineage, showcasing the grandeur of Hyderabad?s rich cultural heritage. The name "Purani Haveli," which translates to "Old Mansion," emerged after Sikander Jah, the third Nizam, briefly resided here before relocating to Chowmahalla Palace. This transition left the Haveli with its distinctive title, denoting its status as an old but revered structure. The architectural brilliance of Purani Haveli is a testament to 18th-century European influence. The palace is uniquely designed in a "U" shape, with two long, parallel wings connected by a central residential palace. Its most distinctive feature is the world's longest wardrobe, an engineering marvel that spans the entire length of one wing. This wardrobe, built on two levels, incorporates a hand-cranked wooden lift, reflecting the ingenuity of its time. Additionally, the Haveli complex houses fascinating structures like the Ayina Khaana (Mirror House) and Chini Khaana (Chinese Glass House), both adding to its artistic and cultural significance. The palace is not merely a relic of the past but holds immense historical importance. The sixth and seventh Nizams were born here and spent significant parts of their lives within its regal walls. Today, parts of the Haveli serve administrative purposes, housing the South Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police (Hyderabad) and the South Zone Task Force Police Additional DCP offices. The Nizam?s Museum Purani Haveli also houses the Nizam's Museum, which is dedicated to the legacy of the last Nizam of Hyderabad. This museum offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Nizams, showcasing a range of artifacts, including gifts, souvenirs, and memorabilia, reflecting the royal lifestyle. Educational Contributions The Haveli has also embraced an educational mission through the establishment of the Mukarram Jah School in 1987. This private institution operates out of five ancillary buildings surrounding the main palace and has earned recognition as one of the best budget private schools in India. The school provides quality education, maintaining the legacy of the Nizam?s vision for societal upliftment. Today, Purani Haveli stands as a remarkable blend of history, architecture, and utility.
